Strange Things are Happening…

18 07 2010

For the past several months I have been pretty much content listening only to a mix I concocted and call 3 Cool Chicks 2010. It consists of 18 songs, 6 each by Abigail Washburn, Jolie Holland, and Hibari Misora.

“Washburn’s “Strange Things are Happening Every Day” a standard from the days of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, is my telephone ringtone.

Howsomever, I got to listening to Sister Rosetta today, and she is wonderful. So I thought I would share some music. Three versions of “Strange Things Are Happening Every Day.”

First the good sister, and what a collection of guitars she had! I have seen her described as Rockabilly Gospel. Sing it sister:

Next is Fern Jones. I have read that Fern and Sister Rosetta were both early influences on Johnny Cash. Fern, you’re up, darlin’:

And finally, the very different but powerful version from Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, featuring Washburn’s husband, Bela Fleck.

“Some poor wish that they were dead,
Some are glad to be alive,
We have some who are killin’ each other,
Some are commitin’ suicide.”

Captain Beefheart urges us to “Go into bright find the light and know that friends don`t mind just how you grow…”

“High voltage man kisses night to bring the light to those who need to hide
their shadow deeds …”
